The Venezuelan Exodus

Over the past decade, the number of individuals fleeing Venezuela has surpassed five million. This massive exodus stems from a combination of political upheaval, economic crisis, a distressing lack of essential resources such as medicines and food, and rampant crime. These factors have culminated in what is now recognized as the largest refugee crisis in the Americas, with the Bolivarian Diaspora dispersed across the globe.

Unfortunately, information regarding this migratory phenomenon remains scarce, and many countries have yet to acknowledge Venezuelan migrants as deserving of asylum seeker status or refugee protection. With the intention of shedding light on this pressing issue, my project sought to meticulously research and consolidate the data surrounding this exodus. Furthermore, I aimed to present this information through thought-provoking visualizations, allowing for a deeper understanding of the situation at hand. For more in-depth insights into this critical matter, I encourage you to visit UNHRC.

Challenge + Solution

As a member of the Venezuelan Diaspora, I strongly believe in shouldering the responsibility of raising awareness about the ongoing crisis, a duty I wholeheartedly embrace through my artistic practice. In crafting these data visualizations, my process began with extensive research, sourcing data from reliable governmental and charitable websites. I used Processing to translate these figures into accurate and proportionate visual representations. To further enhance the campaign's impact, and Illustrator and Photoshop to create mock-ups, and After Effects for animations.

My overarching goal was to develop an engaging campaign that addresses the sensitivity of this issue. In addition, I designed a series of physical publications to be distributed to make visible what has become one of the most significant migratory crises of our contemporary world. By combining artistic expression with data-driven storytelling, I aimed to make a lasting and positive impact, ensuring that the voices of those affected by the crisis.
